Job Responsibilities

This position reports to the Manager of the Innovation & Architecture group in Advanced Engineering and is responsible to:

  • Design and integrate chassis systems into next generation vehicle architectures
  • Establish design inputs through benchmarking and predictive methods for a vehicle and/or vehicle platform (geometry, mass distribution, acceleration & deceleration, ride & handling, ergonomics, energy consumption, etc.)
  • Mitigate technical risk by delivering CAD assemblies of complete motorcycles containing basic design and analysis of vehicle systems and interfaces
  • Exhibit new vehicle architectures and bundled innovation projects in proof-of-concept physical demonstrators
  • Continuously improve existing and/or create new vehicle architecture and integration processes for Engineering

Education Requirements

Bachelor's Degree Required

Education Specifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering. Master’s Degree in Engineering Preferred.

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in related technical field
  • Foundational Knowledge
    • Strong understanding of chassis system architecture and all major design considerations for vehicle integration. Informed of industry trends, emerging technologies and potential impact on the motorcycle industry. Able to independently develop chassis system architecture and drive the development of detailed chassis system requirements.
    • Considered an engineering expert and has deep knowledge of the engineering theory. Applies graduate-level engineering concepts to develop calculations that give H-D a competitive advantage in product development. Develops spreadsheets or equation based programs that are considered best practice for the design and analysis community and regularly mentors others on their use.
  • Design Inputs
    • Demonstrated proficiency in cascading customer inputs into measurable vehicle level requirements that drives design of a component or system. Demonstrated ability to create set-based design alternatives and describe tradeoffs among conflicting requirements. Demonstrated the use of competitive benchmarking for creating informed vehicle requirements.
  • Conceptual Design
    • Demonstrated high proficiency in CREO Parametric modeling of complex parts and creation and manipulation of large assemblies.
    • Demonstrated high proficiency at integrating complex systems for an optimized vehicle through CAD packaging and alternative design tradeoff studies - with special emphasis on chassis systems for new and existing vehicle architectures.
  • Analysis & Optimization
    • Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing a variety of tools to predict vehicle performance for the sizing of systems, optimization between systems, and prescription of vehicle architecture alternatives – with special emphasis on ride/handling performance and acceleration/deceleration performance.
    • Demonstrated proficiency in developing tools and techniques for tracking and evaluating vehicle weight and inertia by system. Created analysis ready mass property reports for complete vehicles and leveraged that data for product decisions. Prescribed system weight and inertia targets that support the overall vehicle weight and inertia budget.
  • Refinement & Finalization
    • Executed clean sheet drawing datum structures and dimensioning schemes. Conducted multiple part/system tolerance stacks using both straight and statistical stack-up methods. Understands general inspection methods and how GD&T callouts can communicate functionality and feature importance.
    • Experienced in designing parts for assembly (DFA). Regularly develops designs that are easy and efficient to assemble correctly, difficult to assemble incorrectly, and accommodate the needs of the assembly operator and specific assembly line or station.
    • Experienced in designing parts to be produced by manufacturing processes (DFM) typical to motorcycle chassis systems such as casting, forging, stamping, and welding. Demonstrated ability to refine basic part concepts into complete component designs that can be economically manufactured.
