Job Summary

The Dyno Lab Senior Technician is responsible for planning, executing, and reporting engine and chassis dynamometer testing to support development, durability, and regulatory requirements within Engineering. 
This role is responsible for instrumenting and configuring engines and test cells, operating and monitoring complex dynamometer systems, and delivering high quality, decision ready data through expert test execution and analysis. The position also owns test equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting, develops and improves lab procedures, and supports continuous improvement through 5S and CI practices.

Job Responsibilities

This Engineering position will be held accountable for delivering the following:
Conduct and Support engine dynamometer testing activities including:

    • Instrumentation of Engines
    • Engine Setup and Fixturing
    • Data Acquisition Setup
    • Test Execution & Monitoring
    • Test Data Review & Report Out
  • Conduct and Support required regulatory testing
  • Follow both in-house and regulatory calibration/preventive maintenance schedules
  • Conduct equipment diagnostics, repairs, and preventative maintenance (PM)
  • Create/modify work instructions/procedures
  • Perform installation & calibration of instrumentation
  • Adhere to the 5S concept and all other supporting CI (continuous improvement) methods

Education Requirements

Education Specifications

This position requires an Associate Degree in Mechanical/Electrical or related technical area.

Experience Requirements

The successful candidate will have a minimum 5 years related experience. 

In addition, they will have demonstrated the following:

Test Development & Execution (development, durability, and regulatory)

  • Developed new test methods to evaluate new failure modes or a new component/system.
  • Demonstrated ability to shorten test timing and prove correlated test results.

Test Instrumentation

  • Experience independently and successfully applying instrumentation tools and techniques during project execution.
  • Provided high quality test data through detailed understanding of transducer designs, calibration, limitations, and their appropriate usage. 

Data acquisition systems and techniques

  • Demonstrated understanding of data acquisition systems and techniques through successful execution of testing projects.
  • Track record of consistently delivering quality decision ready data that meets customer expectations.

Analysis of test results to provide decision ready information

  • Developed tools to efficiently reduce & summarize test data in charts, plots, and diagrams for purposes of design analysis.
  • Has analyzed test data in both time and frequency domain.

Test Equipment Troubleshooting, Maintenance and Repair

  • Performed all maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of test lab equipment and working knowledge of industrial HVAC systems, Basic PLC control systems.

Engine/chassis dynamometer testing and development

  • Experience Integrating/programming multiple systems within an engine test cell to operate in conjunction with one another.
  • Developed complex custom tests to achieve developmental goals and/or custom data acquisition requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to proactively analyze, in real time, test results to determine test validity in the early stages, minimizing test verification time (i.e., data drop-out, spikes, etc.) 

Fabrication of Test Fixtures

  • Ability to apply basic machining & welding techniques.

The pay range shown represents the national average pay range for this role. Your pay may be more or less than the stated range and is dependent on your geographic location and level of experience.
