Job Summary

As a Systems Engineer in Vehicle Dynamics, you are responsible for delivering world class ride and handling performance for current and future Harley-Davidson vehicles through the application of vehicle dynamics theory, simulation, and laboratory and on-vehicle testing. You will interact with all areas of engineering as well as external stakeholders such as styling and marketing to translate the Voice of Customer into exciting, highly capable vehicles that exceed customers' expectations. You must also keep an eye on the future and help identify and develop new technologies and methods to improve vehicle development capabilities, deliver exciting vehicles, and advance the state of the art in vehicle dynamics. Job Responsibilities

  • Manages and performs vehicle testing to deliver superior ride, handling, and stability performance
  • Ties subjective evaluations to fundamental vehicle dynamics concepts, objective measures, requirements, and vehicle design attributes
  • Performs vehicle dynamics simulation studies to identify influences of key vehicle parameters and drive design direction prior to and during physical vehicle testing
  • Creates test, evaluation, and design guidelines along with standardized tools that seamlessly support new product development and innovation teams
  • Creates and manages project timelines that integrate into the overall timing of the larger program and account for all key cross functional requirements
  • Demonstrates the ability to work with others across all levels of the organization, effectively communicates technical and practical attributes of vehicle performance, and builds consensus when needed
  • Explores potential new product spaces and applications of two-wheeled vehicles and develops relevant test methods and performance criteria to deliver ground-breaking designs and exciting new products

 

Education Required:

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or related engineering degree is required.

 

Education Specifications:

Position requires a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or other related technical degree.

 

Experience Requirements:

The successful candidate will have a minimum of 3 years of relevant engineering experience in a related field.  In addition, they will have demonstrated some or all of the following:

  • Technical understanding of vehicle dynamics concepts and their relationship to subjective and objective measures of vehicle performance
  • Analytical aptitude for creation or use of objective test methods, metrics, and analysis techniques
  • Familiarity or training in computer programming and other automated data analysis tools (Matlab, Somat InField, Python, GlyphWorks etc.)
  • Vehicle development via simulation, test data acquisition and analysis, or on-vehicle testing
  • Interaction / collaboration with remote test sites
  • Proficiency with project management tools and principles in topics such as requirements, scheduling, risks and issues, budgets, metrics, and test planning
  • Development of vehicle or system requirements based on quantitative and qualitative customer expectations

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Strong motorcycle riding and evaluation skills
  • Experience installing, calibrating, and/or testing with data acquisition systems
  • Interaction or participation with motorsports teams (preferably motorcycles)
  • Understanding of kinematic and dynamic principles and relevant experience, training, or exposure with dynamic simulation software packages such as LMS Virtual Lab, ADAMS, Working model 3D, Matlab/Simulink, FastBike, CARSIM, BIKESIM, Altair MotionView, VI-Grade, etc.
