Harley-Davidson is on a mission to the lead the electrification of the Motorcycle Industry and is excited to open our Silicon Valley Product Development Innovation Center focused on EV Systems. We are looking for a Battery Systems Engineering Manager to lead an experienced team driving the innovation, design and development of EV batteries for H-D’s future portfolio of HV and LV electric vehicles.


In this position you will:

  • Create the strategy for high-performance electric vehicle battery packs.
  • Assemble and lead a multi-disciplinary team to develop modular, scalable EV battery systems from concept through high-confidence proven designs ready to transition to product delivery teams.
  • Utilize individual and group design, drawing, specification and code reviews to demonstrate and drive the application of robust technical fundamentals to optimize vehicle performance, quality, DFM/DFA and cost.
  • Build the culture: Help establish a consistent mindset that’s relentlessly focused on the highest value work. Lead and reinforce application of best practices to streamline the product development process and deliver world-class engineering to efficiently, effectively lead the industry.
  • Partner with leading universities, technology partners, suppliers and H-D’s advanced vehicle and system engineering teams to drive innovation to optimize the vehicle, riding experience and business metrics.
  • Leverage H-D’s extensive product development assets including test labs, proving grounds and expert product development capabilities to deliver best-in-class performance, usability and quality.


Education Required:

  • This position requires a bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical or software engineering. Advanced degree appreciated.


Knowledge, Skills & Experience Required:

  • Expert in battery system design and development. This would be demonstrated with a minimum of 5-7 years of experience as a lead battery system engineer and at least one clear example of automotive battery system ownership from conceptual design to mass production and market introduction.
  • Deep understanding of the battery system’s underlying physics, primary functions and how it can be optimized to drive customer-valued differentiation and business value. Will serve as the technical guide and knowledge resource for battery mechanical design, battery thermal design, battery electrical design, battery safety design, battery control design and battery functional performance design. Your extensive experience will enable you to lead and/or execute in any of these sub-disciplines.
  • Expert-level systems engineering fundamentals. You have, and can clearly articulate how, you would implement a rigorous systems engineering approach (v-cycle, test-driven development, requirements definition, decomposition and flow-down) to battery development.
  • Experience designing and developing systems/components utilizing multiple manufacturing processes.
  • World-class results using 3D CAD, engineering calculations, analysis/simulation and GD&T.
  • Success in solving challenging technical problems in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate technical subjects in a clear, concise manner to multiple levels of the organization.
  • Success in directly or indirectly leading a team to meet aggressive quality, cost, timing, and performance objectives.
