POSITION DESCRIPTION:

The Harley-Davidson Museum seeks a dynamic and visionary Chief Curator to lead its exhibitions and collections. Reporting to the Director of Museum Experiences and a member of the senior management team, the Chief Curator is an essential voice in the museum’s efforts to build its reputation for exhibitions, public programming, audience experiences and collections management.

Established in 2008, the Harley-Davidson Museum (H-DM) engages visitors of all ages and backgrounds in the dramatic story of one of America’s great manufacturers, in the past, present, and future of motorcycles and moto-culture. JOB SUMMARY:

The Harley-Davidson Museum offers a rich weave of artifact-based and interactive installations contextualizing the motor company’s 116-year history and showcasing its world-class collection. The Chief Curator develops and manages annual and long-range projects providing a consistent and exciting visitor experience. In addition to leading the curatorial and exhibits teams, the Chief Curator works closely with all members of the staff as well as various contractors and vendors to create engaging experiences for museum visitors. The ideal candidate must be able to articulate a creative vision and direct large and small projects to secure successful outcomes.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead design and implementation of a consistent and interactive experience for museum visitors.

• Plan, develop, and implement museum exhibits using both internal and external resources.

• Serve as a project leader and lead exhibit developer on specific museum related projects. 

• Monitor and analyze all projects to ensure that goals and objectives for content development and interpretive design are met.

• Develop and maintain processes and procedures based on industry best-practices.

• Initiate and implement policies and project implementation strategies.

• Act as a key museum spokesperson for internal and external publications, presentations, and media support.

• Supervise staff of five including three direct reports: curator, registrar, and exhibitions manager.

• Develop and manage department and project budgets.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ten years of related experience developing exhibitions in a museum setting and five years in a museum leadership position.

• Administrative skills in areas such as leadership development, project management and budgeting are required.

• Experience applying experiential design principles to broadly engaging, sustainable exhibits that combine traditional exhibit techniques with high-concept design, media, and interactives.

• Demonstrated success developing both small- and large-scale projects that require intricate production techniques, materials, and project management to maintain gallery installations ranging from periodic updates to 10,000 square foot temporary installations.

• Master’s degree in museum administration, public history or a related field is preferred.

• The ideal candidate will have an appreciation for the brand and the company’s history.
