The Harley-Davidson Motor Company Product Development Center (PDC) located in Wauwatosa, WI is home to the mantra – You dream it. We build it. Join our team as a  Lead Digital Sculptor.

 

Summary:
The Lead Digital Sculptor is a member of the Design Studio’s Technical Operations team that leads the co-ordination and development of digital and physical vehicle concept mock-ups working alongside Industrial Designers, Design Engineers, and Model Builders through the utilization of computer-aided design, rapid prototyping, visualization & communication, and project management. The Lead Digital Sculptor is also considered a key continuous improvement champion identifying and implementing new technologies into the digital sculptor job duties and overall design process.  

 

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to develop part designs that meet functional & aesthetic requirements
  • Develop & manage 3D CAD part models and full-vehicle large assemblies (LAM)
  • Establish and host CAD design reviews with design studio team members
  • Provide technical feedback to industrial designers, model builders, and prototype suppliers throughout development process
  • Create technical drawings to communicate part design to internal machine shop and/or outside suppliers
  • Utilize working knowledge of designing for rapid prototyping processes such as SLS & SLA 3D printing, CNC milling, and traditional metal fabrication techniques (i.e. cutting, welding, bending)
  • Establish mock-up build strategy alongside the industrial design and the concept build shop team members 
  • Co-ordinate, communicate, and track part ordering and delivery in support of physical mock-up builds utilizing the electronic work order system and indirect procurement
  • Provides continuous improvement direction on new technologies or tools to advance the work of the Digital Sculptors and the design process (for example the implementation of Virtual Reality technologies into the design process)

 

Education:

  • Bachelors of Arts degree preferred

 

Experience:

  • Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience
  • Interpreting design direction in the form of verbal instructions, concept sketches, and/or clay models.
  • Conceptualizing and communicating alternative design solutions through CAD models, hand-sketches, etc.
  • CAD modeling highly stylized and functional parts utilizing sub-divisional, parametric, and technical surfacing modeling along with sheet-metal and mechanism tools and techniques
  • Managing large assemblies utilizing simplified representations
  • Generating working CAD models from clay scan data
  • Utilizing real-time visualization tools such as Keyshot, KeyVR, or VRED
  • Managing projects

 

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working in a transportation design studio desired.
  • Experience with working with clay during the design process desired.
